7 Questions with. . . Simon Beecroft:
1. The Lego Star Wars Visual Dictionary sold over 1,000,000 copies last year. Were you surprised?
Yes, of course! It's exciting to have made something that so many people get a real kick out of. When we launched the book at San Diego Comicon last year, the reaction was great: everyone who looked at the book, looked at it for ages! It's good that books can still have immense appeal.
2. How does it feel to be a New York Times Bestselling author?
I tell my wife, I shouldn't have to do any housework. I'm a New York Times Bestselling author. Cuts no ice.
3. What's your favorite DK book that's NOT related to Star Wars?
I love the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides; I always take one of the Travel Top 10 Guides when I go abroad. My kids love choosing which cakes to bake from the Children's Baking Book. I also love the new-style Ultimate Guides, the latest being Iron Man: the Ultimate Guide to the Armored Super Hero.
4. Will you be dressing up for this year's Comic Con? I hear there's a stray pair of Leia buns hanging around the DK office.
No, I'll be in my usual disguise as a mild-mannered, bespectacled publishing type.
5. Yoda vs. a velociraptor. Who wins?
Ha, I pity the velociraptor!
6. What's the last book you read?
The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow. Actually, I'm reading
Bellow's books in order of publication. Early days yet. I'm now on Seize
the Day.
7. You've written scads of Star Wars Readers--and in turn, you're
helping create a new generation of fanboys. Why do you think Star Wars
endures?
The other day I had a half hour conversation with the 5-year-old
daughter of someone who works at DK; this girl was the biggest Star Wars
fan, loved DK Readers, knew everything about the movies. Just saying -
it's not just boys. And maybe that's it - Stat Wars can be enjoyed on so
many levels by some many kinds of people.
