International Sales sells DK books into 45 foreign languages and 65 countries round the world. Generally under license to co-edition partners, who translate the text to fit our layouts and return disks to us for printing so that several languages can print in sequence on the press, and only the black plate with the text is changed between languages. This gives a better print cost for all participants. In special cases and particular countries (notably the Arab World where the text must run from right to left and the pages print in the opposite order), we sell the high-res disks to the publisher, they print their own edition (carrying all the costs), and pay us a royalty. At the current count 19 sales managers based in London, Stuttgart, Lisbon, and Tokyo, plus a team of 5 at our sole agents Insiders in Bratislava, talking 16 different languages between them, with 12 assistants backing them up, work full-time to negotiate new license contracts, fulfill our obligations, get translations back in time, ensure books get to the right place, get it all paid for, sell reprints, and get everything recorded correctly in a database that tells us what our business is achieving. An indispensable Sales Support team of 8 enables us to keep the show on the road. With 120 Eyewitness Guides to supply to 44 languages, and 72 Eyewitness Travel Guides updated regularly to supply to 26 languages, we keep the Production department on their toes.
