The DK Media Resources Library consists of three departments: the DK Picture Library, DK Images - the commercial arm of the library, and Picture Research - the team who buy in images from third party sources: agencies, photographers and specialists.

The library was established in 1988 with one two-drawer filing cabinet of images. Prior to this, all the artwork and photography from completed titles were packed away in trunks and taken off and stored in a warehouse in south London. The library started life primarily as an archive, and over the years has become a valuable asset to be utilised by both DK and outside sources. Roughly one third of all the images loaned each year are to third party commercial sales clients.

The majority of the photography held in the library has never been seen in print - for every single image in a book, there are, on average, another ten pictures from the same shoot - and this provides a wealth of great new material. As a result library holds just under 3 million images, transparency and artwork of a fantastically diverse range of subjects from animals to architecture, from space to sports, from flowers to food. Of these just under 30,000 are termed "unique images" while the rest are associated leftover shots from the same photo-shoot. The library also houses a few thousand images bought from outside archives whose collections have been sold off.
